LECTURE NOTES

Lecture 6: Typography Composition

For today class, my group present for the lecture. We talk about Environmental composition, Environmental grids and Alternate methods.

Environmental composition:

  • typography is created by stuff which shows composition.

Environmental Grid:

  • From images or observing environment create lines and shapes to guide placement for typography
Alternate methods:
  • Doesn't have specific rules, changes whatever we like is more flexible than the traditional girds

Kinetic Typography: Moving type to tell stories and evoke emotions.
  • Motion (cannot transform) and Fluid (can transform)
  • Normally use at TV, web

3D Typography: editing software such as Maya, Cinema 4D
  • Creates extra depth

VR : Immersive in nature

INTRODUCTION

PROJECT 1 - TROUBLEMAKERS MANIFESTO COLLOQUIUM

For our project 1, we had to create a key artwork of an academic conference  which is "The Troublemakers Manifesto: A Design Colloquium." We need to present troublemakers and also need to relate to designers.

We need to know the meaning of troublemakers before creating the key artwork, here is the meaning that given by Mr Vinod:

Troublemakers often make others feel uncomfortable. They challenge the norm, they question establishments rules and the status quo. This tension is needed to break the monotony brought about by societal conformity to the diktats of those wielding influence.

To most people, troublemakers are not a welcome lot but without their disruptive tendencies - creating ripples and ruffling feathers - unspoken ideas will not be made known, and innovations will not come to pass.

Why do they do, what they do? What principles and values lie beneath their decisions and actions? Are you a troublemaker, if so what is your manifesto?

At first, i only think of the word troublemaker and think that factories did cause many troubles and problems so i made this

Fig 1.1 1st try

But, Mr Vinod told me i got whole thing wrong at the begining, what i need to do is something that designers "fight for change". So i create another one, i think that the cats create troubles and also mix the cat with the fighter so it looks like it can fight.

Fig 1.2 2nd try

I did it wrong again, the cat did make troubles but not an issue. Mr Vinod gave me some suggestion that he like the previous exercise and told me that it quite suits the concept of this project, the splash of the colors. Therefore, i try again.

However, it doesn't work i need to find another way. And i come out these ideas:

Fig 1.9 5th Attempt

Finally, one of my design get approved (Fig 1.5), but Mr Vinod said that need to change the guy, it just looks like a model but didn't relate to designers, troublemakers or creative person. Thus, i work on it again.

I choose Van gogh as he is a creative person, and actually, he make troubles too. He fall in love with his cousin and make a girl pregnant, and because he has a bit of mental illness he cuts his left ears off. I use the fonts and make it colorful to related to designers. While making his eyes colorful because designers pop out ideas while observing around.

After all, Mr Vinod said it looks like more about talking his story and he find a mask in my file, he ask me to work with it.

I don't like this design and both sir don't like it also. Maybe i should redo the whole thing but suddenly Mr Vinod say it maybe can work, he helps me and i also change and added something into it and this is my final key artwork.

FEEDBACK

Week 6 (30.09.19)
For my project 1, i need to bring out the message fight for change and also need to relate to designers, i need to redo the whole things because i misunderstanding the meaning of it
Week 7 (07.10.19)
The cat doen't work for the troublemakes , it does make trouble but not a big problem, and it is still not realated to the designers, and the arrangement of the text is unreadale. The previous exercise that i did before is more match for this project and maybe i can do something else based on that. Next, my PDF file isn't visible in lectures.

Week 8 (14.10.19)
Online feedback:
I like the symmetry... the text is ok, but the guy?!?! Who is this person? If you use someone so clearly, then the person becomes the focus ... that person is suppose to represent troublemakers/designers/creative people etc. Right now he just looks like a model la... that’s the issue. Weixuan you need to think quick and resolve this so that by tomorrow you have something that you can work with for your collateral

REFLECTION

Experience
Week 6 (30.09.19)
Giving lectures and presenting in front everyone is stress, and we need to make sure that we didn't give the wrong information.

Week 7 (07.10.19)
I feel very lost on my project and no ideas about it. It was because i cannot get the point of the requirement of the key artworks.

Week 8 (14.10.19)
It was my first time doing many attempts but keep getting rejected. I feel disappointed about myself and maybe sir disappointed on me too, although doing all these i still don't really like what i have done but i don't know which way i should go. The worst is, there is no time for project 1 already.

Observation
Week 6 (30.09.19)
Some of the students get approved from their first try, I'm feeling envy on them because i don't have any idea for mine.

Week 7 (07.10.19)
Not only me but my all friends are still stuck in project 1. Hopefully we will get approved next week.

Week 8 (14.10.19)
Feel stress and the atmosphere of the class today is a bit down. It was a bad day, the rain is too heavy and i haven't done my work yet even i work hard.

Finding
Week 6 (30.09.19)
I feel that today class is short because we have a good time during the break.

Week 7 (07.10.19)
I found that the designer is a tough occupation, cause we need to create something new but meaningful and pretty at the same time.

Week 8 (14.10.19)
I found that we have many works to do include this class, other modules need to submit project too. However, i feel really stress about my project 1 since if i didn't finish it, i cannot start project 2.
