LECTURE NOTE
Lecture 7 :Text / Tracking: Kerning and Letterspacing
17.05.19 (Week 7)
For this lecture, we learn about what is Kerning and the Letterspacing.
24.05.19 ( Week 8 )
No lecture for this week
Lecture 8: Text / Indicating Paragraph, widow & orphan, highlighting text
31.05.19 ( Week 9 )
There are different type of options for indicating paragraphs.First is the ‘pilcrow’ (¶).
Next, displays a leading between the paragraphs. If the line space is 12pt the paragraphs space should be 12pt

Gill Sans
Gill Sans by Eric Gill , one of the twentieth century's earliest and classic sans serif fonts.
In the very past days, Gill Sans is itself a curiously sexless font but it began to take shape when Gill was living in the Welsh mountains in the mid-1920s.Gill was asked to paint the shop "Douglas Cleverdon" and this is how Gill Sans begin.
Gill Sans appeared in 1928,when its creator was 44.It was the most British of tyes, not only in its appearance, but also in its usage which adopted by the Church of England, the BCC, the first peguin book jackets and British Railways. Each showed Gill Sans to be a supermely workable type face.
Gill also designed 12 other typefaces, including the popular classic serifs Perpetua and Joanna.
"The shapes of letters do not drive their beauty from any sensual or sentimental reminiscences" -- Eric Gill
Gill died in 1940,just as his most famous font began appearing.

LECTURE NOTE
Lecture 7 :Text / Tracking: Kerning and Letterspacing
17.05.19 (Week 7)
For this lecture, we learn about what is Kerning and the Letterspacing.
- Kerning means the adjustment of space between the words and which is automatic.
- Letterspacing means to add space between the letters.
- Tracking means the addition and removal of space in a word or sentence
Mr Vinod also told us that, it is very important to unedrstand how different typefaces feels as text.It is because, different typefaces suit different messages.Besides, different characteristic show different personality.
It is very important to chose a suitable and correct typeface for each situation, text, passage and so on.For the right font, it create a right message and expression.

In traditional typesetting , there are two unpardonable gaffes—widows and orphans. Mr Vinod said we must to be careful to avoid the occurrence above.
To highlight the text, we can make the text become bold, italic or change the color of the text.Besides, we can highlight the text by placing a field of color at the back of the text. Next, add bullet list or quotation marks to create a clear indent.
- widow: short line of type left alone at the end of a column of text.
- orphan: short line of type left alone at the start of new column.

INTRODUCTION
Project 2:Font design
17.05.19 - 24.05.19 ( Week 7 - Week 8 )
For this project, we were required to dissect five specific letter with lines and circles.I chose a,e,s,r,m of the typeface name "Futura Std Book".
This is what it come out
After that, we were asked to design our own fonts base on the typeface that we dissected. At first, i was very lost and don't know what design should i make. After that, I want my fonts are easily to read and i want to make it very simple, so i change a bit the width of the stroke and curve and there is a little cutting top of the axcender and the stroke. These are my sketches of my design
We need to digitize it on Illustrator as well so this is the outcome
After we digitize all the 15 particular letters we need to put into FontLab.
After putting all the letters into font lab, we need to export it so that we can use it and type it in illustrator and become our own new typeface.
FEEDBACK
24.04.19 ( Week 8 )
The design is ok, but the characteristic cannot apply on all like letter "o" ,but it is still ok just change a little bit like the width of the bowl. After i digitize it , Mr Shamsul say the curve c and e should be the same and make sure all the fonts look the same.
31.05.19 ( Week 9 )
Mr Shamsul said that the thickness of the stroke between "m" and "a,c,e,d" should be the same, and need to make the curve smoother. After all, Mr Vinod said the up down between "v" and "i" is quite awkward he ask me try to figure it out. After all the adjustment, Mr Vinod said it is ok and i can export my letters already.
REFLECTION
Experience:
17.05.19 ( Week 7 )
From dissecting the letters, i know how the letters forms and the details of each letter
24.05.19 ( Week 8 )
From designing the letters , i know there are lots of things i need to learn in this class. For example, any details that you make will effect how the letter look like
31.05.19 ( Week 9 )
I had learn that to make a great typeface we need to make sure all the letters is consistent and each thickness or thinness should be the same.
Observation:
17.05.19 ( Week 7 )
I am very lost on how should i design my own font
24.05.19 ( Week 8 )
I found that to make all the letters consistent is very hard
31.05.19 ( Week 9 )
After hearing the rough briefing of the final project,I feel stress that i should do well in my final project but i afraid that i can't
Finding:
17.05.19 ( Week 7 )
I found that i need to draw many circles to fit the letter "s" when dissecting it, i think it is the hardest letter to dissect
24.05.19 ( Week 8 )
Everyone is really hardworking and focusing on their works and the class is quite quiet today
31.05.19 ( Week 9 )
I found out that adjusting the spacing between letters and the kerning is very important that will make the typeface will look good or bad.
