Lecture Note

Lecture 5:Letters / Understanding letter forms
03.05.19 ( Week 5 )

For this class, Mr Vinod told us that the uppercase letter form may appear symmetrical but if you give a close look actually it is totally difference. Which is the width of the left slope is thinner than the right slope

Same as the lowercase letter forms. It looks very similar but it is actually some difference between each of them, for an example the "a" of Helvetica and Univers

Fig 1.3 The lowercase letter "a" of Helvetica & Univers

The curve stroke of the median form must rise at the median line ,if not it will be ugly

Counterform: the space between the letter which means the negative space

Fig 1.4 Right: counter form
Mr Vinod also told us that, the basic of design principle is very important, which was apply to typography, animation and also entertainment design

Besides that, the aim of contrast hierarchy of information is important when you deal with a large amount of informtion

Lastly, the saying of the day:

On the street , you look at girl or boys, I look at type -----Hannes Von Döhren

Lecture 6: cancelled
10.05.19 (Week 6 )

Today had no lecture as we were doing on our work

INTRODUCTION

Project 1:Text Formatting and Expression
03.05.19 ( Week 5 )

At first , Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul introduce InDesign for us and taught us about the basic tools and how to use it. After that,we are required to design 3 layout of the article
http://www.eyemagazine.com/feature/article/first-things-first-manifesto-2000

Fig 5.1 The three design of my layout
All these layout doesn't work , it is because the idea is not strong enough and I didn't express the meaning of it. I need to explore more

After that, I decide to show the last paragraph which is

"With the explosive growth of global commercial culture, their message has only grown more urgent. Today, we renew their manifesto in expectation that no more decades will pass before it is taken to heart."

It is about the growth so the layout and the title is like going up , also means that the hope  of become better

Fig 5.2 first try of the idea
This is the first try of the idea, Mr Vinod said the layout is good but the headline need more work and exploration and the black and white is harsh on eye . So i try to make it more clear, neat and more easier to read

These are the design that i work hard on it and i choose the second one for the final piece and improve it after the feedback in class

FEEDBACK

03.05.19 (Week 5)
General feedback: Our e-porfolio need to be improve and format our blog properly

Specific feedback: Mr Vinod said i need a great job for both animation of my lettering and my type expression

10.05.19 (Week 6)
Mr Vinod say that the idea is not strong he cannot understand the layout design,he ask me to redo. After redo Mr Vinod say thatWhile the body text seems well organised, the headline is requires a lot more work or exploration. It presently sits awkwardly on the pages. Also, the stark division of black and white is very harsh on the eye. Delete the black background and work on integrating the headline in a more cohesive, suspiring, expressive but appropriate manner in line with the intention explained in your rationale.

17.05.19 (Week 7)
Mr Vinod say that the layout is well but not that well enough, he say to improve the layout make the words should be align and the gabs should be ajust more. After the adjust of the design Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul say i did a great job and i have a nice layout.

REFLECTION

Experience:

03.05.19 ( Week 5 )
This is my first try on Indesign and i am still exploring it . It is hard to make the design that i want because i am still a beginner and try to figure it out.

10.05.19 (Week 6)
I thought design a layout will be an easy work but the truth tell me it is really hard

17.05.19 (Week 7)
From the class feedback, i learn lots of things especially about the spacing between the elements and the whole balance of a layout

Observation:

03.05.19 ( Week 5 )
I found that everyone look stress because we were jumping our "mission level " from normal to advance

10.05.19 ( Week 6 )
I found that most of  the girls' works didn't get approved

17.05.19 (Week 7 )
I work really hard in last whole week to design a good layout and i found that "no pain no gain" if u really work hard on it , you will gain the same prize from your hardworking

Finding:

03.05.19 ( Week 5 )
I am very unwell and cannot focus doing my work because i had sick for 2 week

10.05.19 ( Week 6 )
I feel lost and my passion of doing this falling down, now i don't know how to start again

17.05.19 ( Week 7 )
I know that i still have many to learn in this module, and i need to work harder to improve my skill and knowledge to design a good layout

Chapter 1 Historical Context

Fig 3.1 The Layout Book
Through this chapter, I know that there are lots of historical bases of layout used in graphic design to organize information, many of these historical layouts are still in use. For examples, the design principles established long ago such as the golden section.

The Golden Section:
It is based on the approximate ratio 8:13 and appear in many disciplines including art, design and architecture. It also can be use as a composition tool to help a designer or artist place and size different elements to create a harmonious effect.

Fig 3.2 The Golden Section
The artwork above name The Birth Of Venus painted by Sandro Botticellie in 1486. The artwork below is Bathers at Asnieres painted by Georges Pierre Seurat in 1884.

Fig 3.3 Artworks using The Golden Section

Fig 3.4 The Golden Section apply on Layout
Special Numbers:
Numbers have meaning and significance in design that can go beyond mere measurement. The use of odd numbers in layout design creates asymmetry which is more interesting than the order of even numbers.

Fig 3.5 The rule of thirds
The below artwork is using the Visual Center. It does not refer to a mathematical center of an image or design, but a point that is slightly higher and to the right of it. The Visual Center provides an active focal point in work that can be exploited to provide a hot spot where a viewer's gaze will linger.

Le Corbusier:
This measurement system is based om human measurements, the double unit, the Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio to provide a "range of harmonious measurements to suit the human scale, universally applicable to architecture and to mechanical things".
